ENFIELDS AND ALLAN HITCHCOCK AT HANBURY
After recent injuries, our 612 Bullet scrambler was out at the Hanbury Scramble on the 6th September. Richard Wight has now recovered from his broken hand and rode 5 races during the day. The first was the local clubs own race where he finished 2nd in front of some far more exotic machines.
The next 3 races were in the pre-60 class where on the first of these he lost a nut on the swinging arm spindle causing the swinging arm to become half detached, but still managed a 5th position. He was 2nd in the next and a well deserved 1st in the last of the pre 1960 races. The commentator getting very excited throughout claiming that in 30 years he had never seen an Enfield do this well.
The final race of the day was an invitation race to the top 5 riders/bikes from each class. This includes much more competitive machinery from amongst others, the top 5 pre 1974 and top 5 pre 65 bikes. Richard had a good ride and managed a very respectable 5th place. Not bad for a 1959 bike!
Our other rider, Dave Dunn has made the decision not to ride the Enfield anymore and to stick to the modern motocross. The brake and gearlever differences were something that was very difficult to get use to, especially when racing where you do not have time to think. It is a shame as Dave proved that he was an excellent rider taking the Enfield to a 2nd place in his very first race on a British Bike. We wish Dave the best and thank him for his efforts earlier in the season.
This left Dave’s Bullet available, for which our very own Allan Hitchcock took up the opportunity to ride his first competitive meeting where he competed in the 3 pre 1960 races. Allan rode well and more importantly enjoyed himself finishing all 3 races in respectable places.
