Exhaust Systems
MOT RULES
For UK residents the MOT rules covering motorcycle exhaust systems changed in 2005. An exhaust system NO LONGER requires a "BS" or "E" stamping. Instead they must meet the following guidelines which are subject to the discretion of the tester:
1) The complete system must be in a satisfactory condition free from leaks and securely fastened.
2) The noise level must be of an acceptable level and on a par with other comparable models of engine size and year (is the Bullet not one of a kind?).
3) There must be no unacceptable markings on the system for example "Not for Road Use" etc. Note: None of our systems have these markings but this does not neccesarily make them "legal" or acceptable to neighbours!

Take a look at these 2 photos. This is exactly the same exhaust pipe fitted on 2 different Bullets. We all know that exhaust pipes may need a small amount of persuasion to fit and yes there are variances between the pipes, but before blaming the pipe please remember there are differences between Bullets!
EXHAUST SYSTEM 1950's STYLE

This system is a copy of the mid-1950's exhaust fitted to the Royal Enfields. In the kit is the exhaust pipe, silencer and heavy-duty silencer clip. All parts are made in England. It will give enhanced performance along with a 1950's sound. All parts can be sold individually, but this short silencer will not fit on to the standard pipe fitted to the newer Royal Enfields.
The silencer has a removable baffle which can be modified by the owner to give the desired compromise between noise and performance.

EXHAUST SYSTEM SWEPT BACK GOLDIE STYLE

This system with its swept-back pipe and Goldstar type silencer has 3 fixing points. The silencer has been lightly baffled to give a nice 50s sound. The front pipe is swept back as far as possible but still allows use of the standard gear lever. All the parts supplied with the kit, including the heavy duty silencer clip, are made in England.
The silencer has a removable baffle which can be modified by the owner to give the desired compromise between noise and performance.

This English made system is a copy of the 1960's upswept exhaust fitted to the Royal Enfields. The kit consists of the exhaust pipe, silencer and heavy-duty silencer clip. It will give enhanced performance along with a fairly noisy 1960's sound.

HIGH LEVEL EXHAUST SYSTEM

For looks or competition (will require removal of R/H tool box). Please note this system has very little silencing and would not pass an MOT. However, the "MUTE" listed elsewhere in this section, can be fitted which will help to reduce the noise level. The front pipe is supplied longer than required incase the owner wants to fit a different silencer and therfore will need to be trimmed to the required length. The kit includes the exhaust pipe, silencer and heavy duty silencer clip.
Note: A heat shield (Part Number: 91043), which helps to protect your leg/trousers from the hot exhaust pipe, is available as an optional extra.

EXHAUST SYSTEM WOODSMAN STYLE

This English made system is based on the American spec. Bullets of the 1950's, but has been re-manufactured to suit the modern Bullets. A really smart looking system with a fixed mechanical baffle.
Note 1: Will require removal of the R/H tool box.
Note 2: A heat shield (Part Number: 91043), which helps to protect your leg/trousers from the hot exhaust pipe, is available as an optional extra.
Note 3: We regret individual components are not available for the Electra or Thunderbird.

EXHAUST SYSTEM CAFE RACER (SWEPT BACK)

A very stylish exhaust system which is made in the UK. It has a more swept back exhaust pipe than our standard swept back system but maintains the same Gold-star styled silencer and heavy duty silencer clip. This silencer has a removable baffle which can be modified by the owner to give the desired compromise between noise, performance and to recreate that 1950s sound. It has 3 fixing points. This system (when fitted on Bullets) can only be used with rear-sets.
Note2: The Electra (X) exhaust pipe is not as swept back, enabling it to be used with the standard footrests.

SILENCERS - STANDARD

These English made silencers are a direct replacement for the standard Indian made versions and are a superior quality, both inside and out.
Note: The 1986-96 350's have a smaller inlet.

SILENCER, GOLDSTAR STYLE

This is the silencer as used on our various Goldie style systems. With a little modifying (shortening and redrilling the bracket) it can be fitted on the standard factory exhaust pipe. It needs no modification to fit the standard Electra pipe.

SILENCER, LESS RESTRICTIVE

This silencer is similar to the one we use on our 1950s style (200087) system, but has an extended inlet pipe to allow the direct bolting on to the original short Indian made exhaust pipe. Being less restrictive it enhances the performance and gives the 1950s sound. It is made in England and has 2 fixing points.
This silencer has a removable baffle which can be modified by the owner to give the desired compromise between noise and performance.

MEGAPHONE SILENCER

**NOW WITH BAFFLING**
If you are looking for engine performance then this reverse cone mega is the answer. It has an chromed reversed cone, which if removed gains even more power and lots more noise! This now comes with a removable baffle and packing. Additional packing is also widely available. Recommended only for off road use!

UNIVERSAL SILENCER

This chrome universal silencer has a fixed mechanical baffle which produces a good compromise between performance and sound. It measures 16" overall, so is fairly small. It is supplied with fixing clip and universal bracket which can be drilled to suit all models.

DYNO FIGURES

The red line on the graph shows a totally standard 500 Bullets power against revolutions of the engine. The blue line is the same Bullet but with one of our 200087 exhaust systems (or 91007 silencer) fitted and an increase from the standard 110 main jet to a 117.5. As you can see, on the standard Bullet, although the 500's engine power is quoted at 22bhp, by the time it reaches the rear tyre it is down to15.68bhp. by changing the silencer and main jet we have an increase of nearly 4bhp or 25%!

These are Indian made, shorter and freer flowing silencers than the standard export models. There are numerous different suppliers and qualities of exhaust systems available from India, we have chosen these particular exhausts as the best compromise between quality,fit and price. These short silencers need to be fitted with the longer front pipe as listed.

EXHAUST PIPE 500cc

500 BULLET
This English made exhaust pipe is a direct replacement for the version fitted to the Indian built Bullets from January 1997 onwards which has the PA valve. This replacement does not have the unsightly provision for this PA valve and therefore allows the removal of the whole "Pulse Air" system, yet allows the standard silencer to be retained.
500 ELECTRA
If you are planning to tune up your Electra, the first step is to replace the standard exhaust pipe. This English made exhaust pipe is a direct replacement for the Indian made pipe and is supplied complete with flange. The standard exhaust has a small internal pipe which severely restricts the potential performance of the engine. It will allow you to retain the standard silencer if required.

EXHAUST PIPE BLANKING PLUG

If you have removed the PAV system, this stainless steel polished domed plug is can be used to blank off the hole that is left exposed in the standard exhaust pipe (or the cylinder head on the late 350's and leanburn models). It has an internal olive to create a gas tight seal.

SILENCER BAFFLES

These baffles can be used in virtually any silencer. The smaller baffles are supplied with most of our silencers as standard and can be modified by bending the tangs or shortening to achieve the best compromise between noise and performance. They are attached with a small bolt.

MUTE

This can be used to reduce the noise made by an exhaust system. It cannot be modified in the way that the exhaust baffles can and is the correct diameter to fit tightly in side the 350cc exhaust pipes and the 350 & 500cc high level trials pipes that we offer.

This will fit the standard exhaust pipe to give an upswept angle for the silencer to bolt on to.

REDUCERS

On the older models some of the exhaust pipes were 1.1/2" (38mm) and some were 1.3/4" (44.5mm). These reducers/expanders will allow the use of different sized silencers on different sized pipes.

HEAT SHIELD

These will fit virtually any bike, not only are they suitable for high level systems, but can be used on the front low level pipes to hide any ugly discolouration caused by excessive heat.

BLUE SHIELD

This is an internal exhaust pipe sealant that is designed to help prevent "pipe blueing". Since pipe blueing is caused by excessive heat it may still occur if an engine is not in proper tune or if the carburettor is jetted too lean.

EXHAUST SYSTEMS **EFI MODELS**
All the exhaust systems and silencers below are for the EFI models only. When changing exhaust systems you are altering the fuel to air ratio that the engine requires and therefore with the exception of silencer 91080, it is our recommendation to upgrade the standard ECU (engine control unit). In conjunction with Dynojet UK we have developed a “Power Commander” for this very purpose, for more details see the Accessory Catalogue > Electrics > Ignition > DYNOJET POWER COMMANDER.
Note: All of our EFI exhaust pipes have provision for the original oxygen sensor.

CLASSIC SILENCER (EFI)

This is an English made and chromed silencer which has been developed specifically for the EFI models. It has a removable baffle and is fully compatible with the standard ECU. It simply bolts on in place of the standard silencer.
It can be used with the exhaust pipe 91085 (see above) to create an all British made system (Part Number: 91130) which includes the silence, pipe and clip.

OXYGEN SENSOR BLANKING BOLT (EFI)

If you have fitted the Dynojet Power Commander you will need to disconnect the oxygen sensor in the exhaust pipe. This stainless steel polished domed bolt can be used to blank off the hole that is left exposed when you remove the sensor.
