How to remove Amal float valve?

I could use some tips on removing the float valve from the bowl on an Amal 276AC/1A carburetor on a '43 WD/CO 350. Specifically, this is the brass fitting that juts out the bottom of the float bowl once the banjo bolt and the input line are removed. I imagine that once this is removed, I'll be able to lap/ clean up the float valve Is the valve base threaded into the bowl? Or popped free with a hammer? I've tried turning it lightly and gave it a rap and no go. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks! -Michael in California

Hi, I think this is cast in and not removable, certainly I have never seem a float bowl with it removed at any scrapyard/autojumble. It would be difficult to seal again if it did come out. Reseat the float needle in with. Vince

Last line should read , reseat the float needle in situ. Vince

You should be able to lap in the needle in situ. Make sure the needle itself isn't worn too much and if so get a new one. Only use a really FINE polishing/ lapping compound like Brasso. The seat area is very small and it's easy to overcut it. If all else fails new float chambers are available from Amal but they are not cheap even with the favourable £/$ exchange rate! I'm guessing you want to seal it because your carb drips fuel. Do check everything else first, particularly the thickness of the fixing fibre washer, too thin and this lifts the whole float chamber too high for the valve to cut off properly. Also., the bottom cap nut must be a deep one, there are several sizes available.

Vince and Mark, Thank you for the insights. I must be missing something still. There seems to be no way to remove the float from the top to get to the valve from the top. So it seemed reasonable to remove the brass fitting from the bottom. If it is indeed fixed, and the float cannot come out, it isn't clear how to lap with that little access. Hopefully I'v missed something silly and will have a good laugh about it. Mark - Those are especially good things to check in addition. And yes, it *pours* out now, while it was functioning fine in the past. You're referring the fibre washer where the banjo bolt attaches the feed line to the bottom of the bowl? I've circled the area in this image: http://thestebbins.com/in/AmalBowl.JPG Exile, Kind of you to share the video. Thank you. Turns out it's for a different model. For the Amal 276, the bowl is separate.

Sorry it didn't help. I found a nice webpage for you though.. Amal 276 exploded view of parts. Not schematic.. this is the real thing. Put your mouse over the picture for an enlarged view. Parts list included. Looks as if the brass fitting is cast in place...

Amal 276 Good luck with it...

Michael, unless it has been altered by a previous owner the float should be brass and have a spring clip on the top of it which engages with a groove cut in the needle. You should be able to pinch the clip inwards and lift the float clear of the needle.

Mark and All, Thank you for your help. It was simple and I missed it. Simply pinch the clip at the top of the float and pull. The needle drops out, ready to be cleaned and lapped. All set now and no leaks from the carb. Of course the engine is another story :) Thanks again, -Michael
