As you probably know I am having no end of bother getting this sodding bike to run correctly... Today me and my mate Mark who's an engineer have reset the ign timing and gone through every permeation of jets and needle setting from 106-108 needle, 220-340 main and 3 and 3.5 slide etc... Still wont rev out.. I've gone back to std cams and pinion this evening to eliminate any possible valve timing issues. IMG_20180513_WA0012

I'm wondering whether something more serious is amiss.. I may yet have the head off and take a look..

Hi Tom, if the engine starts and runs well enough to get you going quite well up to certain speeds and with all else that has been done and discussed, I doubt taking the head off is the answer. If it were my bike, I would be back on points for the ignition by now, as I strongly suspect there is something amiss in that department. If no joy there, I would be trying another carb. Regards, Paul.

Hi Paul. A funny thing happened when we were out at the weekend trying to sort it out.... I went round a roundabout i.e. right hand lean and the bike picked up off of the roundabout like a scolded polecat for a few yards and then died of again... We suspected fuel feed from tank to carb so changed the tap to one that pisses like a donkey but it made no difference... I'm miffed at the moment.. Tom

We also tried float height but that seems OK..

Hi Tom, based on your experience on the roundabout, it might be worth checking for a loose connection in the wiring? Regards, Paul.

It was a wiring problem that caused a friend of mine to "park" his trike on top of a wall recently. Engine "died" then revved up flat out, causing the front wheel of the trike to "wheelie" in an alarming fashion of sufficient height to clear the wall.

Well I thought I'd give it a go.... Turned on fuel.. Tickled carb... Turned on ign... Started first kick... Adjusted tick-over.. Running lovely... Not ridden it but reckon it might've been cam settings.. I've fitted a new ignition coil and the engine sounds really sweet.. Obviously std cams would do that but I'll keep them in untill I've run her in.. Tom

Hi Guys Well being in the middle of a house move I finally got out on ASBO 26 again... And wow it shifts... The plug colour is a bit on the black side I'm on 107 middle notch at the moment but she flies... I'll go out for a jetting run at the weekend.. I notched up about 10 miles this evening enough to know its very nearly right.. I can only think that I may have set the performance cams up incorrectly. This maybe down to the adjustable pinion I was using but with the bike currently on std cams and pinion it's running like a dream.. I will drop the high lift ones back in on the std pinion once its run in.. But very impressed with performance at the moment. REgards Tom

Hi Paul Yes mate it's really come together since I went back to the std cams.. I think I was fighting a losing battle as it was. At least once I've run her in and made any tweaks and adjustments I can reinstall the performance cams in the confident knowledge that everything else is spot on. I'm going to retry your originally suggested jetting again 106/220 with needle on top notch etc as a starting point and see how that goes. REgards Tom

Well got out for a decent ride today. Bowling along at 80 feathering the throttle, bike running like a dream then cough cough splutter die..... Managed too restart and limp upto the Holyville cafe on half throttle... After a quick brekky investigated carb and found that the needle jet had unwound itself... Sorted that and bike hasn't missed a beat... Just got to sort out a bit of clutch drag... Plug colour spot on.. Running 106 needle jet with needle on top notch as per Mr Henshaws original suggestion.. Now to notch up a few miles before the cams go back in... REgards Tom

According to some schools of thought, you already have!

I've just been looking at fitting my high performance cams (Hitchcocks PART No. 90023) to my '93 500 bullet and they seem to mesh together very tightly which doesn't feel right to me, (with my limited experience). How were yours? Also, did you take any pictures of your grinding of the crankcases?

Hi Tomshayes. I note you got ASBO26 up to ~80 (mph?) on standard cams and pinion, presumably pinion on dot and inlet cam 1-tooth retarded. Then you replaced the cams with the performance ones. Did you reach any valve bounce with either? Did the performance cams do as well as the OEM ones?
The reason I ask is that my 1996 535cc with both std and performance cams (inlet retarded, steel conrod, E13 bearing, 32mm Amal Mk2) easily makes 75 mph (GPS) at ~4500rpm with a 21T sprocket at just over half-throttle but valve bounce is starting with both cam sets. I must admit I’m scared to take it further because I’m not sure my 70-year old hands/brain (or the indian frame) are up to going faster.
Cheers, ChrisD

Hi Chris, something is very wrong if you are getting valve bounce at what must be rather low engine speeds and with standard cams. Perhaps the valve springs are weak, or their fitted length is too long, possibly caused by excessive cutting of the valve seats for instance? Valve bounce with the competition valves, springs and cams shouldn't be an issue at all and with standard cams and valve springs, you should be good for around 6,000 rpm. Regards, Paul.

21T sprocket ChrisD? Surely thats way overgeared making it difficult to get the revs up unless going down hill?
